Hi All,
This weather has been a bit crazy, going between 70 degrees and 30 degrees overnight, but I know Spring is around the corner! Our bees are venturing out and welcoming the sunshine, and my tulips and daffodils are popping their heads out from the earth. The buzz is in the air, and with that comes my search for a new group of interns, who are eager to share their strengths and hungry to learn what they can from our working Homestead model. Every Spring, I interview students who care about the earth, and who want to explore ways in which they can make a difference. During an iEat Green internship, students have the opportunity to work in the organic gardens, learn about composting and making compost tea, planting, harvesting and cooking. An integral part of our day takes place in the kitchen, where we prepare a delicious, vegetarian, plant based meal, and then sit down around a communal table and share what we have created. I’m looking for students who are available to volunteer two days during the week at the iEat Green Homestead, and one weekend morning at a Farmers Market, to table for Slow Food North Shore, and promote the Slow Food Movement. If this sound like something you would be interested in, please send me your resume and cover letter to Bhavani@iEatGreen.com.
This week on the Progressive Radio Network, I am very excited to have as my guest, Josh Balk from the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), to talk to us about the work they are doing to enact animal welfare policies that help minimize the suffering of animals. Josh has been instrumental in getting some of the world’s largest corporations, such as Walmart, Wendy’s, Kroger’s, Denny’s and dozens more, to stop purchasing animals from factory farms where they use veal crates, gestation crates or battery cages. He’s also been a leader in creating and supporting start-up animal-friendly companies, including co-founding Hampton Creek, and guiding venture capital firms and high net worth individuals to invest in this space. Prior to coming to HSUS, Balk worked at Compassion Over Killing (COK) where he conducted investigations into factory farm operations and launched one of our nation’s first advertising campaigns on farm animals. Balk’s work has been covered by the Associated Press, Fortune, CNN, New York Times, Washington Post and dozens of other outlets. Please join me on Thursday and hear more about the work Josh is doing at the Humane Society of the United States.
