Once Again, iEat Green is Disgusted by the Policies of Our Administration! We Need Everyone to Rise Up and Stand Up to This Craziness! iEat Green Celebrates Spring with Slow Food North Shore! Graham Riches, Author of ‘Food Bank Nation’, Joins Bhavani on PRN

Hi Everyone,

I never thought I would say this, but listening to NRP (National Public Radio) and reading the paper is harmful to your health, that is your mental health! I arrived this morning to my yoga class in tears! The stories of children being ripped from their parents, jailed like criminals, and treated inhumanely, had me riled!  I was so upset! Yoga was just what I needed! Yet, we can’t put our heads in the sand, and pretend it isn’t happening. We need to stay informed, we need to know what is going on, and we need to rise together and protest!! I know it is hard, because there is so much to protest against, but we need to do it. Make it a social event, and become an activist with your friends! On June 30th, a nationwide protest is being planned for a March in Washington to protest the Trump administration’s policy of separating families caught crossing the US-Mexico border. There will be sister marches planned in other cities around the country.  Please mark your calendars and plan on joining in. We need everyone!!

Then, on September 8th, the Peoples Climate Movement will join forces to show our support for Climate Change, Jobs, and Justice, again in DC and other cities around the country. Mark your calendars now, and Save the Date!!

Thank God Slow Food North Shore’s Spring Soirée was tonight!! After starting my day in tears, I needed a lift, and tonight’s event did just that!  We had a gourmet, local, seasonal, Italian feast, all served family style by Chef Peter of Osteria Leana in Oyster Bay. We had local wine donated by Macari Vineyards of Mattituck and Channing Daughters of Bridgehampton. The energy was wonderful and the room was buzzing! It was a sold out event, filled with friends, Slow Food lovers, and people joining in for the first time, celebrating the pleasures of the table and the cheer of good company! Thank you to all who joined!!

My guest this week on the Progressive Radio Network is Graham Riches, Emeritus Professor and former Director of the School of Social Work at the University of British Columbia. He is also the author of a new book called, Food Bank Nations; Poverty, Corporate Charity and the Right to Food, looking at the sustainability, effectiveness, and moral legitimacy of depending on corporate food banking as the primary response for rich countries to feed their poor. Graham’s research lies in the fields of poverty, human rights and social policy within Canada and the rich world focusing on the politics of hunger (food insecurity), corporate charity (food banking) and the right to food. In 1985, he first wrote about food banks and their introduction to Canada from the USA in a book entitled, Food Bank and the Welfare Crisis. Graham Riches is an expert in his field, and I am very excited to have him on, to discuss food justice, poverty, hunger, and possible solutions to this crisis.
