Hi Everyone,
I couldn’t stay away! Even though I had to be in school until 1:30 on Friday afternoon, serving Swiss Chard to Middle School students, I knew I would regret not taking part in the Global Climate Strike, so the minute I was finished, … I dashed out of there and caught a train to the city! I made it in time to hear Greta Thunberg, the 16-year-old Swedish student who has inspired the youth movement around the globe, give her speech! I am so glad I went! Listening to her speak, and feeling the energy of the next generation, really gave me a glimmer of hope, especially in these dark and scary times. The protest signs were great, the chanting was great, the kids were great, and the weather was perfect!
My guest this week on the Progressive Radio Network is Diego Gerena-Quiñones, the founder of Cargo Bike Solutions Inc. – Cargo Bike Solutions is all about navigating the city, safely, sustainably, quickly, and making it logistically easy! Diego had 7 years of experience as a bicycle courier before starting Cargo Bike Solutions. It was a natural progression as he saw the potential for combining high volume transportation on bikes with the delivery of food to the hungry. Diego’s small but growing fleet of bikes can transport high volumes of goods without emissions, cutting right through traffic and never worrying about parking tickets!
In 2017, Diego met Hannah Dehradunwala, co-founder and CEO of Transfernation Inc. at the City’s first ever Food Waste Fair in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Together, they instantly found synergy and complemented each other perfectly. Diego was looking to introduce cargo bikes as a viable transport solution to food waste, and Hannah was looking to create a service that could employ people to do the work of recovering excess food from cafeterias, restaurants and big events, instead of sending it to landfills where it contributes to climate change emissions. Since then, their combined efforts have built out a robust operation in New York City, partnering with some of the biggest names in corporate catering, like Flik, and restaurants like Dig Inn. Diego has rescued over 80,000 lbs of food, via bicycle, and that food was put into community food pantries and regenerative compost programs. Please join us on Thursday for what promises to be a great conversation!
