Take Action: Tell Congress to Support Healthy School Meals! Don’t Believe the Claims on Food Labels!

Tell Congress: Healthy School Meals Help Our Kids Do Well in School!

Starting next week, the House of Representatives will evaluate the American Families Plan, which is a new legislation that can provide a billion dollars to schools to create healthier meals. Schools have certainly made progress in the last 20 years, but there is still a long way to go to make the meals healthy. Research has shown that students do better when they eat a healthier diet, and COVID has shown us that everyone can fight the disease better if they have a strong immune system. Please let your representative know how you feel!

Lawsuits Surge as Food Manufacturers Greenwash Their Products!

For years, food manufacturers have been cashing in on the desire of consumers to be more conscious of the foods they eat, with little reality to back up their claims. Labeling meat and dairy as “sustainable”, or “humanely raised” is a great way to increase sales, but there is little federal oversight to these claims, and food activists are taking to the courts! Words like “healthy”, “all natural” or “raised sustainably” are allowed to be used by the industry giants, and it does real harm to the small, independent farmer or company who can’t compete in price with the cheap, mass produced product.

For example, Cargill markets their turkeys as raised by “independent family farmers”, but in reality, they have huge contract farmers who are kept on a tight rope and are forced into debt. Then there is Sargento cheese, who claims their cheese doesn’t contain antibiotics, however lab tests proved otherwise, and Tyson’s “humane and environmentally responsible production” and “all natural” chickens are bathed in a chemical disinfectant before packaging.

We need to hold these corporations accountable for their deceptive advertising, and we can do it by boycotting their products. We can all “Take Action” by supporting our local farmers and small food producers who are really creating healthy, sustainable products, and align our spending with our ethics.
