iEat Green Shares Interview with Katy Franklin from ReFED!

Hi All,

This past Thursday I interviewed Katy Franklin. She is the Operations Director at ReFED, a national nonprofit working to end food loss and waste by advancing data-driven solutions to help businesses, funders, innovators, policymakers, and more address the problem. Most of us are aware of the problem, but don’t know how to help. It’s unconscionable to think that 35-40% of our food produced ends up in a landfill, creating methane gas, and adding to our climate crisis, while at the same time, 1 in 8 Americans are food insecure. And when thinking of food waste, you must realize it isn’t only the food that is wasted, it is also all of the resources that went into creating that food, like water, labor, transportation, packaging, etc.

ReFED created a Road Map 2030, and have identified seven areas to focus their efforts, which will have the greatest impact on our food waste problem. By addressing each of these areas, and identifying the role that all of the stakeholders play in getting to the solutions, they are creating a pathway to reduce food waste and minimizing the impact that food waste has on our climate.

ReFED has launched the Food Waste Action Network (FWAN), which is a space designed to inspire collaboration between individuals and organizations from across the food system and from a diverse set of backgrounds. Please check it out and join others in our effort to reduce food waste.
