Tell the Senate Not to Turn Back the Clock on Food Safety

Only three years after passing the landmark Food Safety Modernization Act, some Senators are trying to undermine its consumer protections.? Several amendments to the Senate Farm Bill which may be considered next week would prevent the Food and Drug Administration from protecting consumers from unsafe produce and imported foods.? Others seek to exempt more processors and farms from food safety regulations, meaning more unsafe food could reach your table. Other amendments would allow poultry plants to ship products without federal inspection.? Poultry is among the highest risk foods for causing foodborne illness outbreaks and severe illnesses.? Relaxing food safety inspections is the last thing that should occur if they FDA truly wants to protect consumers. Please write your Senators and ask them to defeat these dangerous riders on the Farm Bill.? Tell your Senators it is important to you that the Farm Bill promote safe food, not weaken consumer protections.

Call on Your Grocery Store to Join the Campaign for GE-Free Seafood

Polls? have shown that 91 percent of consumers do not want the FDA to allow genetically engineered fish and meat into the marketplace — yet the FDA is close to approving AquAdvantage, a salmon that was genetically engineered to grow faster. If allowed, this would be the first genetically engineered animal in the U.S. food supply. To make matters worse, the FDA has openly said that it will probably not be labeled, leaving consumers in the dark about what we are eating. At least 35 species of genetically engineered fish are in development and the approval of genetically engineered salmon will set a precedent that could open the floodgates for other genetically engineered animals (including cows, chickens and pigs) to enter our food system. Nearly a dozen major food retailers, including Trader Joe’s and Target,?? have already taken the Pledge for GE-Free Seafood, to not purchase or sell genetically engineered salmon, or any products containing genetically engineered salmon or seafood. Please join these suppliers, by asking grocery stores, restaurants, chefs and other food companies to take the Pledge for GE-Free Seafood.? By pressuring food companies to keep genetically engineered seafood off their shelves and off our plates, we will be making.?Take action now!

Tell Senate Leadership to Allow the Vote on a Fracking Moratorium Now!

Washington fracking protest

Two New York Senators are currently stalling a vote on two important fracking bills that are in front of the Senate right now.? One bill (S.4236A) would institute a two year fracking moratorium and the other bill (S.674) would end the special industry exemption that stripped the ?hazardous? designation from fracking waste.? Both are essential to protect the health and environment of New Yorkers.?Tell Senate leadership ? Sens. Jeff Klein and Dean Skelos ? to immediately bring the fracking moratorium and hazardous waste bills to a vote, before the Senate goes home on June 21! Keeping fracking out of New York is of utmost importance. Our elected officials need to know that if they allow fracking in this state, they are jeopardizing the health their constituents and the health of? New York state’s water and air. That is why on June 17th, New Yorkers Against Fracking, along with thousands of concerned residents, will gather at the State Capitol in Albany to protest fracking and demand that Governor Cuomo reject fracking and blaze a trail to a renewable energy future.
