May 22nd, Sustainable Living Film Series Screening of “Speciesism:The Movie”
May 22, 2014 @ 6:00 pm - 9:30 pm
Modern animal farms are struggling to keep a secret. Most of the animals used for food in the U.S. are raised in factories hidden deep in remote areas of the countryside. Speciesism: The Movie Director Mark Devries set out to investigate. The documentary takes viewers on a sometimes funny, sometimes frightening adventure, crawling through the bushes that hide these factories, flying in airplanes above their toxic ?manure lagoons,? and coming face-to-face with their owners.
As it?s title suggests, the film questions whether an animal?s life holds more value than a human life, and asks: just because we can control other beings, should we? Speciesism: The Movie brings viewers face-to-face with the leaders of this developing movement, and, for the first time ever on film, fully examines the purpose of what they are setting out to do. Interviews from scholarly figures like Richard Dawkins, Sherry Colb, and Gary Francione take Devries? arguments home, and add to the film?s credibility.
