An Interview with Film-maker Byron Hurt, Director of “Soul Food Junkies”

Hi Everyone,

Well spring has finally arrived! My seedlings are almost ready to be planted and I just started a whole new round of seedlings today. This weekend, I hope to plant my lettuce and arugula directly into the garden and my sugar snap peas and snow peas are starting to climb. I am still looking for interns to help me out this summer, so please pass this along to anyone who might be interested. You can find out more information about the internship by clicking here.

This evening, I joined the Brooklyn Food Coalition at LIU, for a talk and dinner with the New York Times journalist and best selling author, Mark Bittman, as he talked about his new book, Vegan Before 6, and the local food movement. It was so informative and inspirational! A few weeks ago, Mark was on NPR talking about how he got started on his career in the food world, and it is a great interview. If you missed it, you can see it here. Mark will be starting a new column in the NY Times Dining Section, every month, called VB6. Keep your eyes open for it!

This week, my guest is the award-winning, Long Island film-maker Byron Hurt, whose documentary, Soul Food Junkies, has been passionately changing the way people see their diets. Last month, I had the privilege of attending a screening of the film and shared in the laughter and joy as the concerns of the soul food diet was laid out in front of us. This film talks to its audience in a participatory way,? and raises the concern of what a high fat, low vegetable diet, can do to one’s body. Please join me tomorrow, as I talk with Byron about his inspiration in making the film and his future, upcoming projects.
