An Interview with Max Goldberg, the Founder of LivingMaxwell, a Guide to Organic Food and Drink

Hi Everyone,

Well I am so glad I got through this past weekend. I not only got through it, but it was great! I had two sets of volunteers working the farmer’s markets for Slow Food Huntington. On Saturday, they were at the farmer’s market in Port Washington (the only photofully organic farmer’s market on Long Island), and on Sunday, they were at the Huntington Farmer’s Market. The purpose of us setting up tables at the farmer’s markets, is to raise awareness about the Slow Food movement, and to generate more active members, so that we can bring you all more events. To find out more about the Slow Food movement, go to the Slow Food USA website. On Saturday afternoon, I had the pleasure of doing a cooking demonstration at the Shiloh Community Farmer’s Market in Wyandanch. This market is a youth run farmers market, that is working to bring more fresh produce to an under served area. It’s a wonderful feeling introducing people to new foods. There’s nothing like cooking with local ingredients, purchased right there at the farmer’s market, and turning it into a quick, simple, delicious, vegetarian entree. I share all of the recipes with everyone there, so that they can make the dish at home. My goal, is to help improve the way people are eating, and I feel these demonstrations are really helping. With the deadly pig virus spreading across the country, and meat being raised in a laboratory, there is no better time to explore a more plant based diet and reducing one’s intake of meat. On Sunday, since I was hosting a party at home, and couldn’t do the demo myself, I arranged for two assistants to do the cooking demonstration at the Health and Wellness Fair in Hempstead. The event was a success and many people were inspired by the recipes and foods they prepared. During weekends like this, I need to remember to breath deeply! Ahhh!

Now I can gear up for this Friday, because it is the 3rd Annual Grown on Long Island Celebration, and I am one of the chefs in the Seafood Throw-down Competition! That’s right, I will be at the Suffolk County Farm at 9am on Friday morning, to participate in a friendly competition with my fellow chef/colleague, Okima. We will receive 2 secret ingredients, have 15 minutes to shop the farmers market, and then head to the grill to create a dish for the 6 judges to taste, with enough left over for all of the viewers to have a taste. Please come on down and show your support!
