This past Thursday, I interviewed Lindsey Shute, the Executive Director and Co-Founder of the National Young Farmers Coalition. With the awareness that has been created with the “Good Food Movement,” we now have the opportunity to support a new wave of young?people who are being called to return to the land. The National Young Farmers Coalition (NYFC) grew out of the need for re-evaluating the policies that govern farmers in this country,? and the need to support the next generation of farmers who want to work the land in a sustainable way. These young farmers identified the common issues that make it hard for young, new, aspiring farmers to get started, (capital and land) and together they worked to lobby the USDA to create a micro-lending program. This new program will lend smaller amounts of money, then what is typically needed for an industrial farm, but which is enough money for a young farmer to purchase land and buy equipment to get their farm started. There are many ways in which we can all support this organization. For more information, please listen to our interview below, and visit their website at www.youngfarmers.org
