Hi All,
I feel like I am just recovering from our Thanksgiving Feast for the Needy, and I already need to prepare for Christmas! And in between, we need to squeeze in Chanukah! Why I am surprised, I do not know, since I go through this every year. Whose idea was it to make Thanksgiving and Christmas so close together? Anyway, for all of my wonderful volunteers, please sign up on the doodle document here! Remember, we are still collecting coats and winter items to keep people warm during the cold months ahead, as well as toiletries, new and gently used toys, and re-purposed jewelry from the bottom of your jewelry boxes. The last collection, jewelry, I started last year. I realized I had many pairs of earrings and necklaces that I never wore, that would make a teenage girl very happy for the holidays. Why not take this opportunity to clean out those jewelry boxes, and lighten your load, and make someone happy at the same time! Please polish them up, and put them in a gift box or bag, and drop them off, along with the coats. Thank you!
This week, on the Progressive Radio Network, it is my pleasure to introduce to you, Edward Mukiibi, the Vice President of Slow Food International and an Ugandan Agronomist. In 2006, at the age of 20, Edward founded Developing Innovations in School and Community Gardens, to promote community engagement and agricultural sustainability among youth. In 2008, stimulated by a drought in Uganda, Edward discovered the Slow Food Movement, which helped to give him the strength to oppose the mono crop planting that was going on around him and to promote more traditional agricultural practices that provides stability through diversifying, so that if one crop fails, the farmer still has other crops to fall back on. This model has allowed Uganda to escape the famine that other African nations have suffered through. Last year, Edward was appointed Vice President of Slow Food International, where he helps to steer the global Slow Food Movement and to grow Slow Food’s 10,000 Gardens in Africa project. Please join me on Thursday, to learn first hand, what is going on with land grabbing and agriculture in Africa.
