Hi Everybody,
I am very excited about my new raised beds! My old beds lasted about 16 years, and were completely falling apart, so it was time! I hired my friend and farmer, Larry Foglia from Fox Hollow Farm, to help build 3 raised beds for me, so that I could continue to have some of my vegetables closer to the house. Out in the field, I have 2 very large gardens, where most of the vegetables and fruit trees are, but it is always nice to have your herbs and salad greens close to the kitchen! In planning the raised beds, Larry incorporated the use of some PVC piping, so I could create a mini hoop house and protect some of my most vulnerable plants from pests, using a landscape fabric that breaths and allows the rain and sun to still get in. He also incorporated a little bench on the side, so I can rest in between my planting!
I always get a little overwhelmed this time of the year, because there are so many projects to do around the homestead, and only so many days in the week. Oh how I wish there were 8 Days a Week! Get ready for your Farmers Markets! Some are beginning to open this weekend, and others will be opening the beginning of June. To find a farmers market near you, or to look to join a CSA, (community supported Agriculture) check out the Local Harvest website!
My guest this week on the Progressive Radio Network is Francesco Mastalia, a photographer, a chef, and an author. I initially invited him on my show to talk about his book; Organic; Farmers and Chefs of the Hudson Valley, but he is also releasing a new book called Yoga, the Secret Life, so I’m sure we will delve into that as well! I just received my copy of Organic; Farmers and Chefs of the Hudson Valley, and the photographs are absolutely amazing! Along with the beautiful photographs, is the story of the sustainable food movement in the Hudson Valley and the farmers who make it happen. Please join me on Thursday, as Francesco Mastalia shares with us, his story, and his path of good eating and the secret life of Yoga!
