iEat Green Invites Stephanie Morningstar and Christine Hutchinson from The Northeast Farmers of Color Land Trust to PRN

Hi Everyone,

We are certainly living through trying times, but out of the fire can come re-birth and new beginnings, and that is what I am hoping for. The pandemic has turned our world upside down, but it has also created a space for us to reflect on the social injustices that our country was founded on, and to come together as a unified force to fix it, once and for all! As a white person of privilege, I realize I have a lot of work to do to understand the depths of how systemic racism has created policy that perpetuates the problem, and to do my part to dismantle those policies.

In light of this discussion, it is an honor to invite Stephanie Morningstar and Christine Hutchison to join me on the Progressive Radio Network. Stephanie is the coordinator for the Northeast Farmers of Color Land Trust, and is a member of the Turtle Clan of the Oneida Nation. She is a Herbalist, a soil and seed steward, a scholar, and a student. She considers herself an Earth Worker, dedicated to decolonizing and liberating minds, hearts, and land, one plant, person, ecosystem, and non-human being at a time. Stephanie grows medicines and food for her community at Sky World Apothecary & Farm; and occasionally mobilizes knowledge for Indigenous-led climate change and food sovereignty research projects.

Christine Hutchinson is a board member of the Northeast Farmers of Color Land Trust, and is a veteran teacher in Newburgh, NY.  Originally from Long Beach CA, Christine relocated to the lower Hudson Valley, via Brooklyn and Albany, NY.  In 2004, she started a character education, life-skills, community service program for teen girls. Since 2006, she’s been involved in food justice issues and becoming self-sufficient with her small-scale commercial poultry farm. Currently, Christine is the the education coordinator for Downing Park Urban Farm, a working community farm that grows vegetables, fruits and flowers and provides educational programs for local youth and residents. This work keeps her involved in gardening and stewardship projects, food security and equity issues, distribution, and engaging with leaders in the urban agricultural movements. Christine started a nonprofit called Our Core, Inc. to umbrella her older and newer projects. Most recently, she established an internship for youth at the urban farm. Where ever she goes, in all of her projects, her experience informs her ability to do research, question ideas, bring clarity and focus, and the ability to organize around multiple projects.

I hope you can join us for this timely and important discussion, and to learn more about the work that these women are doing, and the work of the Northeast Farmers of Color Land Trust,
