Hi Everyone,
Before I get down to iEat Green business, I need to share with you an awesome event that I participated in! I was one of over 100 people who participated in an art performance piece that took place in front of the White House on Sunday called, “I Want a President.” The original text was written in 1992 by artist, Zoe Leonard, and has since been read aloud in many countries around the world. This was the first time it was read here in the USA, and was organized and curated by my daughter Saisha Grayson, along with Creative Time. Leading up to the collective reading, many workshops took place in New York and Washington DC, to create a new document, inspired by the original, that reflected the qualities we would like to see in our President. It was incredibly inspiring and moving to be a part of this event. If you missed it, you will have another chance to participate in the collective reading of “I Want a President“, on Monday, October 31st, at 6pm at the Highline! Please check out the many photos and videos on the Facebook page!
OK, now down to business! This is my 22nd year, organizing a huge Thanksgiving Feast for about 1000 hungry people, to be served in Rufus King Park in Queens. Every year, I partner with the River Fund NY, a local food pantry, to prepare and serve a homemade meal to their clients, along with a huge collection of coats and warm winter items to share with those people who do not have enough. To pull this off, I depend on the generosity of my local community, both for donations of food, clothing and money, and for the sweat equity of volunteers and their time. If you want to participate, here is a link to sign up for shifts. If you want to donate money for our event, you can make a tax free donation to the River Fund, and mark the check “Thanksgiving Feast.” Their address is The River Fund NY, 8911 Lefferts Blvd, Jamaica, NY 11418. If you want to donate food, turkeys or clothing, please either email me at Bhavani@iEatGreen.com or call me at 516-238-3616 to coordinate. Every year, I look forward to the many returning faces, and the new friends I meet.
My guest this week on the Progressive Radio Network is Andrianna Natsoulas, the new Executive Director of NOFA-NY. (Northeast Organic Farming Association) Andrianna has been a social and environmental activist for over two decades. She has worked at various organizations from Greenpeace to Food & Water Watch to the Northwest Atlantic Marine Alliance. She has coordinated with global food movements and has served on national and international boards and steering committees to protect fishing rights, fight trade agreements and build alliances. Andrianna wrote a book, entitled “Food Voices: Stories from the People Who Feed Us,” which explores the movement towards food sovereignty across five countries. The second edition will be released in the Spring of 2017. Please join me on Thursday, as I welcome Andrianna to PRN and to NOFA-NY!
