Hi Everyone,
I know it feels like we finished our big event for Thanksgiving (that’s because we just did!) but it is already time to start the planning for our Christmas Feast in the Park. If you want to sign up to help, click here. This meal is a lot simpler than the Thanksgiving meal, so we will only be prepping on Sunday and Monday, December 17th and 18th, and serving on Tuesday, December 19th. We will be preparing an Italian Dinner, featuring Baked Ziti, Caesar Salad, Garlic Bread and Brownies and Apple Pie for dessert. Therefore, our coat drive and gift collections take on a big role. We have had a lot of success in asking the community to use this opportunity to clean out your jewelry boxes and donate those items that you no longer wear. Polish them up and put them in a box, or bring them here and we will box them up for you. These make great gifts for the older children who no longer want toys, but would be thrilled with a new pair of earrings or necklace. We will also take “like new” stuffed animals and other children items for gifts. I am doing a big call out for WINTER COATS, HATS, GLOVES, SCARFS, BOOTS, SOCKS, BLANKETS, SLEEPING BAGS, TOTE BAGS, TOILETRIES, and TOWELS. Anything to help keep people warm, as the winter approaches. We need all sizes, so please help us collect from your friends and family. All gift and clothing donations can be dropped off at the iEat Green Homestead in Old Westbury, through Monday, December 18th. If you prefer to make a monetary donation, donations can be sent to; The River Fund-NY, 89-11 Lefferts Blvd., Richmond Hill, NY 11418. The River Fund Food Pantry is a 501-c3 organization, so your donation is tax deductible. For further info, call Bhavani at 516-238-3616. Thank you to everyone who helps to make this possible. I couldn’t do it without all of you!
This morning, while you are reading this, I am participating in a rally at Richard Harris Terrace, 199 Chambers Street, NYC, to demand that our NYC elected officials move to divest the NYC Pension Fund from all fossil fuel investments and from companies knowingly causing climate change, and instead, to reinvest in renewable energy that puts New Yorker’s safety ahead of corporate profits. Two weeks ago, I attended the Rise and Resist meeting, that takes place every Tuesday at 7pm at the Church of the Village, 201 West 13th Street, New York, NY 10011. They are a direct action group committed to opposing, disrupting, and defeating any government act that threatens democracy, equality, and our civil liberties, and I am hoping that they will join the movement, started by 350.org, to address the dangers of climate change and our current administrations denial of it! Please consider joining this group and resisting together! It makes it much more fun!!
My guest this week on the Progressive Radio Network is Lierre Keith, a former vegan, who has written a new book called, The Vegetarian Myth: Food, Justice, and Sustainability. Lierre has been dealing with many health issues that she directly attributes to her 20 plus years as a vegan, and she wrote this book in the hopes that she can prevent others from going through the same pain she has experienced. Her passion for animals, and commitment to sustainability, preserving the earth, and good food still remains the same, but she needed to re-brand her identity to fit in with her new food choices. Please join me on Thursday to learn more about Lierre’s journey from Vegan to Paleo, and why she made the change.
