Hi All,
Every year, The Coalition for Healthy School Food hosts their annual Gala at the Academy of Medicine in NYC, and it is an evening of sampling the deliciousness of plant-based delights! Thanks to the Coalition, all of NYC public schools now enjoy the benefits of Meatless Monday’s and offer a plant-based option in their schools. We still have a long way to go, but The Coalition for Healthy School Food has made great in-roads and I look forward to my continued work with them!
As usual, in my fear of not having enough food, I made plenty of extra, and was able to provide dinner to Momma’s House (a home for teenage mothers and babies) on Friday and to Community Solidarity (formally ‘Food Not Bombs’) a food share program in Hempstead on Sunday. As long as none of it goes to waste, I am happy!!
My guest this week on the Progressive Radio Network is Anna Francese Gass, the author of Heirloom Kitchen, and an acclaimed chef in her own right!
Anna grew up in a small town on the Rhode Island shore and moved to NYC for college and a new adventure. After working in the corporate world for a while, she decided that what she really wanted to do was to study cooking, so she quit her fast-paced sales job and enrolled in Culinary Arts at the French Culinary Institute in Lower Manhattan. Soon thereafter, she found her niche in test kitchens and has worked for Whole Foods, Mad Hungry, Martha Stewart Living, Omnimedia, and Food52. She has also assisted on numerous, successful cookbooks and worked on a number of cooking television shows.
However, she found her real passion in meeting immigrant women from around the world and learning about their cooking traditions and favorite recipes. She put all these together in her latest cookbook, Heirloom Kitchen, which shares not only the recipes but also the stories of these amazing women and their favorite family recipes. Her hope is that by transcribing these cherished recipes, they will continue to be shared and loved for generations to come. I hope you can join us for a great discussion and to discover some of Anna’s favorite recipes from the book!
