iEat Green Joins Rally for “Grannies Respond” A Caravan to the Border; Cooking Demo for Grief Retreat; Matthew Prescott, Author of “Food is the Solution” Joins Bhavani on PRN!

Hi Everyone,

Yesterday, I joined a few hundred women at a rally in Union Square to help send the ‘Grannies on a Mission‘ off in style! Oh how I wish I could go with them!! Grannies on a Mission are elder women who are outraged by the cruel and inhumane way our government is treating immigrant children and their families. When people risk everything to escape violence in their countries, they should not be faced with the disgraceful treatment our government is handing out. GranniesRespond  was formed as a reaction to our governments embarrassing behavior.

Below are their demands:

  1. All children must be returned to their families immediately. Families must be kept together at all times and no child should be isolated from their loved ones.
  2. Immigrants and refugees must be released from detention as soon as possible – never held indefinitely.
  3. U.S. immigration policy must reflect the golden rule: do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
  4. All human beings must be treated equally, fairly, and with decency.

These Grannies will not be quiet while little ones are crying alone without the love of a parent to soothe them. They will not remain idle while tent cities are built to indefinitely detain families seeking safe haven in our country. Our government and our institutions do not have dominion over our morality. We the people will be the moral compass of our country and we will not rest until compassion and decency are restored.
GranniesRespond are traveling to McAllen, Texas, with a message of basic human decency, and they are picking up more grannies along the way! They are creating caravans from East to West, West to East, and North to South, while growing a movement to defend human decency and plain common sense. Our women elders have been around long enough to know right from wrong, and they’ve spent their lives caring for others. They know this treatment is wrong and they are mobilizing to do something about it!!

On Monday, Aug 6th, hundreds of grannies and friends from across the United States will arrive in McAllen, Texas, for 24 hours of action. They are hoping to grow the caravan. Join here. And they are hoping to inspire others to start caravans of their own. Start yours here. Their goal is to build a movement of caring and kindness that rises above politics… and reunite and free migrating families.

Eating well can help you deal with Grief.

This weekend, I will head to the Himalayan Institute in Honesdale, PA, to participate in a weekend Bereavement Retreat. We all know that there is a connection between what we eat, and how we feel, and the food choices we make can effect how we handle grief and sadness. During this retreat we will focus on the Happiness Diet, and the foods we can eat that will lift our spirits and help us to feel better.

My guest this week on the Progressive Radio Network is Matthew Prescott, author of the new book, Food Is the Solution: What to Eat to Save the World. Matthew is an advisor to the Good Food Institute, Senior Director of Food & Agriculture for The Humane Society of the United States, and a leading figure in the global movement to reform how we farm and eat. A sought-after speaker and thought leader, Prescott has spent over a decade and a half sharing his ideas with Ivy League universities, Fortune 500 companies, consumers, and more. His work has helped lead to sweeping changes in the supply chains of hundreds of major food companies, impacted countless individuals’ diets, and has been covered extensively by the media: his work has been featured by CNN, in the pages of the New York Times, the Wall Street JournalUSA Today, the Boston Globe, and countless more; he’s been published in FORTUNE, the Washington Post, Barron’s and othersand he was even once a guest on NPR’s Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me. He lives in Texas with his wife, the novelist Lara Prescott.
