iEat Green on the Progressive Radio Network Welcomes Back Eric Holt-Giménez, Executive Director of Food First and Author of a New Book, Can We Feed the World Without Destroying It?!

Eric Holt-Giménez, is the Executive Director of the Institute for Food and Development Policy (Food First) and author of a new book called, Can We Feed the World Without Destroying It? In his new book, Eric argues that our present food system is totally broken and needs to be completely overhauled and re-thought, if we want to end hunger and feed our growing population. He explains how the overproduction of food is the cause of chronic hunger and environmental destruction, and that if we try to increase food production within our current system, we will destroy the lives and livelihoods of billions of people, and still fail to end hunger.

Eric spent over 25 years working with small scale farmers across Latin America, and helped launch the Campesino a Campesino (farmer to farmer) movement. In the four decades since, this peasant-led sustainable agriculture movement has spread steadily across Latin America—creating innovative farming methods, raising yields and improving livelihoods for hundreds of thousands of small farmers and their families.

As much as Eric loved working with the farmers, he realized that to make real change, there would need to be a change in national food policies and international trade rules, and to do that, he would need to go back to school. Eric has a MSc. in International Agricultural Development from University of California at Davis and a PhD in Environmental Studies from the University of California at Santa Cruz . He has taught Development Studies at UC Berkeley, UC Santa Cruz, Boston University and the National Gastronomic University in Pollenzo, Italy. His position with Food First, and his influence on the minds of so many young people, gives me hope that we may be able to make the necessary changes and overt the total catastrophe in which we are heading. I hope you can join us on Thursday for a great conversation and insight into our current food system.
