iEat Green Prepares for the Long Island Food Conference on April 25th at Hofstra; and Interviews Beth Fiteni from Green Inside and Out

Hi Everybody,IMG_7612

What a great weekend this was! I not only celebrated my birthday, but I got to celebrate with all of my siblings and their spouses! I have a very close family, and we see each other fairly often, but it is rare for just the 4 of us, without our children and extended families, to get together and play, and that is just what we did! We played, we ate, we gardened, we walked, we talked and we ate some more. My idea of a perfect weekend! But before I got to my celebration, I got to celebrate the life of my dear friends mother, at a very sweet, remembrance ceremony, attended by friends and family. I had the privilege of providing the food for the celebration, and it was an honor to be able to give of myself in that way.IMG_2815

I am now working hard with the Long Island Food Coalition to bring to life, the upcoming Long Island Food Conference, scheduled for April 25th, at Hofstra University. This is going to be a great day, and one you won’t want to miss! Our keynote speaker is Stephen Ritz, from the Green Bronx Machine. He is a teacher from the South Bronx with enough energy to change the status quo, inspiring kids to grow their own food, improve their diets, fostering a love for learning and school, and improving the graduation rates amongst all of the kids he touches. Check out his inspirational ?TEDx talk, and come meet him in person at our conference.long-island-food-conference

I will also be leading a workshop entitled, “Getting Dinner on the Table is a Political Act,” encouraging people to take back the reins and start cooking! The presentation will weave together the connection food has on our health, and our environment, while sharing the ease of getting a healthy meal on the table. There will be over 30 other great panels and workshops throughout the day, such as: Chefs Influencing the Market Place; Investing, Divesting and Digesting; Food Labeling; Food Policy; Eating for Health; Government in Action; Seasonal Eating; Community Gardens; Seed Saving; From Hive to Table; and Aquaculture, to name just a few. Running simultaneously, there will be a whole day of children programming and hands on activities, so you can bring the kids! (and they are free!) There will also be an Exhibition Hall with over 50 exhibitors displaying their products or sharing info about their organizations, as well as an end of the day Networking Reception. For more information, and to purchase your tickets, go to the LI Food Conference website.

Screen-Shot-2015-04-08-at-12.56.00-PM1This week, on the Progressive Radio Network, my guest is Beth Fiteni, from Green Inside and Out. A few years ago, Beth joined me on the show to share her expertise on “Green Lawn Care”, but this time I have invited her on to talk about her latest published paper on “Green Dry Cleaning.” We all see posted in the windows of our local dry cleaners, “Organic Dry Cleaning” or “Eco-Friendly Dry Cleaning”, but what does that really mean? Is there a difference between one type or another? Most of us don’t know, ?and most of us don’t have the time to research the issue, but thanks to Beth’s latest paper, she did the research for us! Please join me on Thursday, to find out what you need to know about dry cleaning, and making the right choice!
