Hi Everyone,
This has been some week! First President Trump trashes the EU, Prime Minister May, NATO, and our allies, and then he practically gets in bed with Russia and Putin, while trashing our intelligent agencies. Meanwhile, he’s trying to put a right wing conservative into the Supreme Court, who would vote in favor of corporate polluters and against the Clean Water Act and the Clean Air Act. Brett Kavanagh is anti-abortion, anti gun control, anti equality, and will reshape our courts for decades to come if confirmed.
Trump is escalating trade wars, cutting funding to the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), opening up our oceans to more offshore drilling, opening our national monuments to fracking, slashing SNAP (food stamp program) and separating children from their parents. We need to all stay vigilant, and not accept this insanity as normal. There is nothing normal about it!! We need to get involved and help to get people out to vote at the next mid-term election. That is the most important thing we can do right now. Focus on our local politics and help to turn over as many seats as we can in both the House and Senate.
My guest this week is very involved in local politics, as the Sustainability Organizer for the Long Island Progressive Coalition. I’m excited to introduce all of you to Ryan Madden, a climate activist and a local mobilizer, who’s shared many bus rides with me to marches and rallies. The Long Island Progressive Coalition (LIPC) is a grassroots organization dedicated to promoting sustainable development, revitalizing local communities, enhancing human dignity, creating effective democracy, and achieving economic, social and racial justice.
The LIPC is a member NYRenews, a coalition of more than 140 grassroots organizations working to bring the next People’s Climate March to New York on Thursday, September 6th at 5:30pm in Battery Park. We will Rise for Climate, Jobs and Justice, and I hope you will march with us! Other Climate Marches will take place in DC and across the country on Saturday, September 8th, as a national movement.
Ryan has a BA in Political Science & Environmental Studies from SUNY Binghamton. He has experience working with civil society groups within United Nations climate change conferences, with non-profits on community-based clean energy programs, and with grassroots organizations on renewable energy advocacy and climate legislative campaigns. Please join me on Thursday as we discuss what LIPC is doing and how you can get involved.
