iEat Green Shares a Taste of the 5th Annual Food Lab Conference, and Welcomes Bren Smith to the iEat Green Radio Show!

Hi Everyone,

This past weekend, I had the pleasure of attending the 5th Annual Food Lab Conference, hosted by the East End Food Institute at the Southampton Campus Stony Brook University. It was a great program, exploring the Taste and Terroir of Long Island’s East End, beginning with a Friday night cocktail hour of passed canapes and local wine, and ending the night with a delightful film screening of Patty Gentry’s Farm, Early Girl Farm in Bellport.

Saturday was filled with more delicious local food, beginning with a light breakfast, and then followed by 2 morning sessions. The first was about Taste, Taste Memory and Eating Mindfully, and the second was about the Terroir, More than Wine? Is there a Long Island Terroir? Which is a great question, and I think the universal agreement was that LI does have our own terroir! The food and wine grown here has a distinctive taste that is unique to our region, and it needs to be celebrated!

The real treat was hearing from celebrated chef, Lidia Bastianich, her story growing up on her grandparent’s farm in a communist country, her food memories, escaping to Italy, and then making her way to the United States with her family. It was a fascinating story about food, family, immigration, and the American Dream. Following that, we enjoyed a Farm to Table lunch on the lawn, prepared by the East End Food Institute. It was quite a day!!

My guest this week on the Progressive Radio Network is Bren Smith, the Executive Director of GreenWave, and owner of Thimble Island Ocean Farm. He is returning to the iEat Green Radio Show to share with us his new book, Eat Like a Fish, which is the story of his path from fisherman to restorative ocean farmer. His company is dedicated to supporting a new generation of ocean farmers and innovators who are working to restore ecosystems, mitigate climate change, and build a blue-green economy. Thimble Island Ocean Farm, is where he pioneered the development of a restorative 3-D Ocean Farming system that has won him the recognition from Rolling Stone Magazine as “25 People Shaping the Future.” He was also the recipient of the 2015 Buckminster Fuller Challenge, one of the most important prizes in sustainability, and has been profiled by CNN, The New Yorker, and National Geographic. I hope you can join us and hear his fascinating story!
