I had a great conversation this past week with Bren Smith, author of the new book, Eat Like a Fish, and the Executive Director of GreenWave, and owner of Thimble Island Ocean Farm. Bren is a restorative ocean farmer, and his book, Eat Like a Fish, is about his path from a fisherman working on a commercial fishing boat, to his development of his innovative 3-D Ocean Farming method. Bren is dedicated to working on social justice issues by choosing to work with communities that are most impacted by climate change or socio-economic challenges and building a blue-green economy. It is clear that Bren has thought the whole process through. He doesn’t just train one 3-D farmer in an area, he trains 25, so that they are their own supportive community. He then encourages businesses to open up, providing added value products like fertilizers made from the seaweed, which can then be sold to local parks as organic fertilizer.
