Hi All,
Yesterday I had a great interview with Bren Smith from Thimble Island Oyster Co. and the GreenWave organization. GreenWave is an organization run by ocean farmers and fisherman, who are dedicated to promoting a new, innovative way of ocean farming, that builds a blue-green economy, while creating jobs, mitigating climate change and growing healthy food for local communities. It is a system of 3-D vertical farming that grows a mix of seaweeds, mussels, clams, scallops and oysters that require zero inputs – making it the most sustainable form of food production on the planet. At the same time, it sequesters carbon, nitrogen, and rebuilds reef ecosystems. Since the 3-D farm sit below the surface of the water, it doesn’t interfere with the natural look of the ocean or the ability for people to enjoy the water. What they grow can be used to clean up polluted eco-systems, as well as for food, fertilizer, animal feed and more. It’s brilliant! They produce high yields with a small footprint. It’s probably the most sustainable system on the planet!
However, Bren also encourages people to go beyond fish and explore the thousands of varieties of sea vegetables available. Bren argues “a sustainable food system must go beyond the innovations: we need to shift our priorities by reducing our consumption of wild fish and embracing the thousands of novel varieties of sea veggies”
