Hi All,
I had a great conversation today with Aarti Ivanic about her research on advertising companies targeting vulnerable groups. She focuses on the effects that marketing to racial and ethnic minorities, stigmatized individuals, and children has on communities, and how it influences their food choices. Consumer behaviors, such as nutrition and exercise, can be influenced by racial identification, who they see in the commercials or ads, (do they look like me?) or what celebrity is promoting it.
Unfortunately, companies answer to their shareholders who want to see profit. Our job, as a society, is to convince shareholders that there is a greater good in “Doing the Right Thing” than in making the most profit.
