Hi Everyone,
I had a great interview on Thursday that I want to share with you. NESAWG stands for the Northeast Sustainable Agricultural Working Group, and they are a coalition of organizations and individuals dedicated to improving our food system so that it is more sustainable and just for all. Kathy Lawrence has been working with the organization since it’s inception, wearing many hats, including the interim director for the past 3 months, while the director, Tracy Lerner had been on maternity leave. Kathy’s past history in the food movement is also quite impressive, as she was the co-founder of School Food Focus, a national collaborative that leveraged the procurement power of large urban school districts to make school meals healthier, as well as the executive director of the National Campaign for Sustainable Agriculture and founding director of Just Food (NY). In her role at NESAWG, she helps to coordinate the largest regional food conference called, It Takes a Region, which brings all of the farmers, farm workers, purveyors, social justice organizations, seed savers, distributors, federal and local policy makers, chefs, and retailers to the table, to brainstorm on ways to bend the existing food networks to become more sustainable, more equitable and more just. NESAWG is a great organization and their conference is a must, for anyone concerned about our current food system, and who wants to work on improving it! Save the Date for this years conference, November 7th, 8th and 9th in Jersey City, NJ.
