Hi All,
This morning I had a very interesting interview with Robert Grillo, the author of Farm to Fable. His new book is an exploration of the cultural norms, myths and fables that we have been raised with, and that we pass on, in order to justify the killing and poor treatment of animals. Most kids, left to their own ethical compass, would choose to not kill animals, yet we have dehumanized the process so that they don’t make the connection. If asked, “do you eat chickens”, a child would say “no”, but asked if you eat chicken, the answer would be “yes”. It’s a very subtle difference, yet it makes all the difference in the world. We don’t ask them if they would like to eat a cow or a pig, instead we offer them meat. We remove the identification, and rename it as an object. This is just one example as to what Robert calls Foundational Fictions, and the book is full of them. It is a new way of thinking about our society’s meat consumption, and it will have you questioning, ‘why do we do it?’
If you missed my interview, you can listen to it here, and if you want to check out the book, I highly recommend it! Farm to Fable: The Fictions of Our Animal-Consuming Culture
