Hi All,
As you can imagine, the farmers and farmer’s markets in Puerto Rico have been devastated by Hurricane Irma and Maria. I had the opportunity to meet many of the farmers from the Slow Food community when I was there 2 years ago, and again this summer at the Slow Food Nations event. In solidarity with the Puerto Rican sustainable farming community and our fellow Slow Food Farmers, we are joining their Go Fund Me campaign to help them get back on their feet.
They are also in great need of Non-GMO/ Organic Seeds. I am putting together a care package to send to them, so if you have any seeds to donate, please contact me at Bhavani@iEatGreen.com
Farm Aid has partnered with Visit Rico, a non-profit organization based in Puerto Rico. Visit Rico’s mission is to strengthen Puerto Rico’s agricultural economy through sustainable agritourism to achieve food sovereignty. Visit Rico has found that supplementing cash flow for farmers is the fastest way to help them get back on their feet to start planting seeds again. You can go to www.visitrico.org or visit their Facebook Page for more information. They appreciate all of our support and solidarity with their island in such trying times.
The news Monday morning was horrific. I woke up to the news of the shootings in Las Vegas, and couldn’t believe that one man could create such terror in a matter of minutes. What will it take for our elected officials to pass laws that will protect us from crazy people like Stephen Paddock? This week, Congress plans to vote on one of the top two NRA priority bills for the year, a bill that would make it easier for criminals to get SILENCERS for their weapons. In Las Vegas, people were able to run and hide because they heard the shots! Please tell your representatives how you feel! Text SILENCERS to 644-33, and you will be guided how to tell your representatives to oppose this bill. Then, please spread the word…. or you can just call your #MOC (members of Congress)
My guest this week on the Progressive Radio Network is Lierre Keith. Her new book, The Vegetarian Myth: Food, Justice, and Sustainability, has been called “the most important ecological book of this generation.” She is co-author, with Derrick Jensen and Aric McBay, of Deep Green Resistance: Strategy to Save the Planet. This is her 6th book! Lierre is also a small farmer, and radical feminist activist. She has been arrested six times and is proud of it! Please join me on Thursday, and hear more about Lierre Keith and her book, The Vegetarian Myth: Food, Justice, and Sustainability.
