Hi Everyone,
This past Saturday, I joined the Cinema Arts Centre and the Sisters of St. Joseph‘s for an outdoor screening of the film, ‘Farming The Future: Farm Life on Long Island.’ It was a great film and wonderful event with different organizations having tables and introducing themselves to the community. I was there with a table for Slow Food North Shore, which is an organization committed to Good, Clean and Fair food. The mission of Slow Food aligns with my life’s mission, to envision and promote a world in which all people can access and enjoy food that is good for them, good for those who grow it and good for the planet. If you aren’t familiar with Slow Food, please check them out and consider joining our chapter.
One organization I met was STRONG Youth, a family and community development organization specializing in youth, gang, and gun violence prevention and intervention. They are doing great work here on Long Island! I also took a tour of the campus of the Sister of St. Joseph‘s, which is an unbelievable resource for the community. They are committed to socially responsible investing and use their resources for social good. They lease land to organic farmers and non-profit organizations growing organic food for the community. They compost, they support the Long Island Native Plant Initiative (LINPI), they have a solar energy field, a waste water management system and have entered their campus into a conservation agreement, so that a portion of the land will remain for agricultural use and another portion is a woodland preservation project. If you are not familiar with the campus at the Sisters of St. Joseph, it is worth a trip!
Lisa Ott, President and CEO of The North Shore Land Alliance Joins Bhavani on the Progressive Radio Network!
My guest this week on the Progressive Radio Network is Lisa Ott, the President and CEO of The North Shore Land Alliance. Lisa is a native of Kentucky, a graduate of the University of Kentucky and the Columbia Business School Program for Non Profit Management and the Yale School of Forestry Conservation Finance Program. She is the past chairman of the National Affairs and Legislation Committee of the Garden Club of America and former Trustee of The Nature Conservancy, Long Island Chapter. The work she has done in helping to preserve open land on the north shore of Long Island is impressive, and it was a real joy to explore it during this past pandemic year. I hope you can join us on Thursday to learn more about the work of the North Shore Land Alliance, and what conservation initiatives could do for your community.
