iEat Green’s Shares Favorite Resources!; Celebrate Earth Day! Join Us In Albany on Monday, April 23rd, And Join the Slow Food Movement!; Anne Biklé Joins Bhavani on PRN

Hi Everyone,

Every Spring I like to share with you a few of my favorite “Go To’s” that help guide me on where to shop, what veggies to avoid due to pesticide contamination, what fruits are the best to eat, what sunscreen is least toxic, which is the best water filter, and are all organic eggs created equal? The Environmental Working Group, has the most comprehensive lists I know of, along with the Cornucopia Institute, which rates dairy farms, soy products, yogurt quality and how to avoid Carrageenan in your foods. To find a local farmers market or CSA farm (community supported agriculture) near where you live, go to Localharvest.org.  They not only list farmers markets and CSA’s, but they can also guide you to local farms, plant sales and events. If you’re looking for seeds to buy, check out Turtle Tree Biodynamic Seeds, High Mowing Organic Seeds, Johnny’s Seeds, and Fedco, for the best in organic seeds. If your looking to purchase organic mulch, Sweet Peet, available in many garden centers is great. It not only looks beautiful, but it feeds your plants while inhibiting weeds from growing.

Earth Day is Celebrated Around the World, every year on April 22nd! It is a call to nature, a day when we work together to raise awareness and to demonstrate support for environmental protection. There are many Earth Day events going on in the New York area, as well as across the country. If you would like to get involved, check out the Earth Day 2018 website. This year’s theme is to raise awareness about Plastic Pollution, which poisons marine life, disrupts human hormones, is clogging our waste streams and landfills, and is finding it’s way into our food system. The exponential growth of plastics is threatening the survival of our planet, not to mention how disgusting it looks, lining our beaches and ruining our landscapes. Check out these 10 shocking facts about plastic pollution, and share them with your circles. We want to inspire change by providing the information and inspiration needed to fundamentally change human attitude and behavior about plastics. Please help this campaign! Reduce your use of plastic, especially single use plastic, like plastic bags and water bottles.

If you live in New York, please join us for an Earth Day March and Rally in Albany on Monday, April 23rd. There are free buses from around the state, heading to Albany, to demand that Governor Cuomo starts acting like the Governor he says he is. He can talk a good talk, but he is not doing the walk! He banned fracking in NY State, but still allows the dirty fracked gas to be shipped across the state by pipelines and railroad cars, an accident waiting to happen, and the dirty, fracked, waste water to be sprayed on your roads. We need for Governor Cuomo to do the right thing, and move our state towards 100% renewable energy, get rid of all fracking infra-structure, and hold the corporate polluters accountable. If he can’t do that, then we need to vote him out!

Slow Food USA is also Celebrating Earth Day with a Give What You Can Campaign. Yes, you heard me right!

This Earth Day Weekend (April 20-22nd) Slow Food USA is Celebrating with a “Give What You Can Day“, where any donation amount makes you a member. Please share this with your friends and family. Slow Food is a wonderful organization. It is a push back to fast-food. It promotes real food, produced in a mindful way, that is good, clean and fair, with access for all, while enjoying the pleasures of the table! This is a great opportunity to be a part of a global movement.  Use this link: slowfoodusa.org/give-what-you-can, which will go live on Friday, April 20th, through Sunday, April 22nd.

My guest this week on the Progressive Radio Network is Anne Biklé, who is a biologist with wide-ranging interests that have led her into watershed restoration, environmental planning, and public health. She co-authored the new book, The Hidden Half of Nature, with her husband , David Montgomery, exploring the parallels between garden health and our gut. She is an invited speaker at universities and national conferences on the connections between public health and the built and natural environments. She has also worked extensively with community groups and non-profit organizations on environmental stewardship and urban livability projects. Anne spends her free time out in the garden with her hands on plants and dirt.
