Can Western Medicine Open Up to the Possibility of Miracle Cures?
I just finished reading this great article in the Washington Post, about Jeffrey Rediger, a psychiatrist on the faculty at Harvard Medical School. He spent the past 17 years studying “Miracle Cures”, which are stories of people who were diagnosed with end stage cancer or other life threatening diseases, and chose to follow their own path. “Cured: The Life-Changing Science of Spontaneous Healing,” is the book he wrote after his research, and one that has mystified doctors, and put them on the defensive as to dismiss such cases as flukes, or one-offs. These stories share the different choices people made in their lives, whether it was changing their diet, reducing stress, incorporating spirituality or meditation into their lives, surrounding themselves with love of family or friends, or whatever, that helped them recover from a terminal diagnosis. I believe in possibilities and think it is worth looking at.
HYDROPONICS Are Not the Same as ORGANIC!
As a board member of NOFA-NY (Northeast Organic Farming Association) I know the importance of a rich soil that benefits local ecology, and adds micro-nutrients and minerals into our food. When food is grown in healthy soil, it is more nutritious and tastes better than food grown in depleted soil or no soil at all. Unfortunately, we have a modern day dilemma. Organic farmers now have to compete with hydroponically grown foods, which are foods grown inside sterile buildings with artificial lights and no soil, relying solely on “nutrient solutions” to feed them. There was no healthy soil involved in growing that produce, and the “nutrient solution” is a proprietary recipe, so we have no idea what is in it. Yet, the USDA allows it to be called organic, purely on the principle that no artificial fertilizers or pesticides were used. Is that good enough for you? It’s not for me!
Not to mention that hydroponic farming doesn’t do anything to help mitigate climate change, while organic farmers are helping to sequester carbon from the atmosphere back into the soil. This competition is threatening the livelihood of traditional organic farmers and we are asking for your support in a groundbreaking lawsuit filed against the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to overturn the agency’s misguided decision to allow “hydroponic” foods to be labeled Organic.
