Farmers and Animal Rights Activists are Coming Together to Fight Big Factory Farms!

Senator Booker and Elizabeth Warren are supporting an overhaul of the way our Factory Farms are run in the Farm System Reform Act. It’s a piece of sweeping legislation, with four principles at it’s core:

• Imposes an immediate moratorium on the construction of new CAFOs and phases out the largest existing CAFOs by 2040
• Imposes the liabilities and costs of pollution, accidents, and disasters on the agricultural conglomerates that control the market rather than on the independent farmers who contract with them
• Creates a $100 billion fund to help farmers who are currently running CAFOs transition to other agricultural operations
• Strengthens the existing Packers and Stockyards Act to prohibit a range of contract terms and structures that let huge meat buyers put farmers in a race for the bottom while denying them political and legal recourse

The coronavirus has shed a new light on the connection between animal and human suffering. Meatpacking plants have been epicenters of outbreaks, with the suffering concentrated among immigrant laborers who then transmit the virus to their communities, along with the likelihood that the virus began in a meat market.

As educated consumers, CAFO’s have no place in our food system, and we need to rid the planet of these toxic, abusive, torturing plants.

Activist and Founder of Food Tank, Danielle Nierenberg, wins the Julia Child Award, following in the footsteps of celebrity chefs!

If you don’t know about the organization, Food Tank, and the work they do,  then you need to look them up!  Danielle Nierenberg is a food activist and the founder of Food Tank, which convenes food summits and other events focused on sustainability and equity in food systems around the country. I’ve been a member for years, and highly recommend supporting Danielle and her work with Food Tank.
