Food Connects it All!
I was so pleased to see the article about Food Education in the NY Times today! Teaching kids about food is such a perfect opportunity to weave so many topics together. You can’t talk about Food Education without looking at its environmental impact, it’s health impact, it’s social justice impact, it’s culture, and it’s economic impact. It is naturally an interdisciplinary curriculum, that empowers kids to take control of what they put into their bodies, opens their eyes to the manipulation of food marketing, and teaches them life skills that can impact them for the rest of their lives. I don’t think anything they learn in school could be as important as that!
The Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture is a nonprofit farm and educational center in Tarrytown, N.Y. They offer many classes, workshops, and lectures on all things related to food and agriculture. Their Food Education curriculum is only one of many that are out there and available, and it is great to see it’s popularity expanding.
As the Farm to School Coordinator for Glen Cove Public Schools, I would love to bring a curriculum like this to our district. Check out one of the videos from their curriculum! Why Food Matters
