GMO mosquitoes are set to be released in Florida and Texas very soon, even though there has not been an Environmental Impact Statement done, nor an endangered species assessment or a study on any human health impacts.
The GMO mosquito was developed by Oxitec, a British biotech corporation. The plan is to release hundreds of millions of these mosquitos, with the hope that they will mate with wild Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, and then produce offspring where all the females die in the larval stage. The intent behind all this is to reduce mosquito populations, with the aim of reducing mosquito-borne disease.
It might sound good (who wouldn’t like less mosquitos?) but there hasn’t even been a study on the ability of these mosquitoes to actually reduce disease transmission!
This sounds CRAZY!!

Aid for Senior Meal Programs Finally Gets Funding!
During this past year, we heard about food insecurity issues quadrupling across the board, and how school lunch programs and food banks were struggling to meet the demand. However, we did not hear that much about the elderly, and how the pandemic effected programs for seniors like “Meals on Wheels” and Senior Center Lunch Programs. It is estimated that one-quarter of low-income seniors are “food insecure’, meaning they don’t know where their next meal is coming from. Even before the pandemic hit, senior meal programs were underfunded. Over the last two decades, funding for the Older Americans Act (the policy that funds these programs) rose only a 22 percent, which according to an analysis by the AARP Public Policy Institute, if adjusted for inflation, actually fell 8 percent, while the demand grew by 63%.
Finally, in Biden’s American Rescue Plan, he has allocated an additional $750 million for the Older Americans Act, which brings the total increase for senior nutrition services to $1.6 billion. A big increase from 2019’s $907 million. Another added benefit of the Senior Meal Programs is the community contact it offers. For so many seniors, loneliness and isolation are as much of a health risk (possibly even more) than lack of food. If you know an elderly person who is alone, consider visiting them, and adding a little love into their lives. In a country as rich as ours, no American should ever go hungry, or be forced to eat junk food because it is the only thing they can afford. Access to healthy, nutritious food should be a right of every being on Earth, especially in a country like ours.
