In the News: Looking at Poverty as the Root Cause to Hunger!

Looking at Poverty as the Root Cause to Hunger!

Having worked with the River Fund NY Food Pantry for years, I know that the root cause of hunger is poverty. One might ask, ‘why in the land of so much wealth, do we have a huge proportion of the population living in poverty?’ Why is food insecurity so prevalent, effecting 38 million people, including 11 million children?

It’s due to an unfair playing field. Systemic Racism is built into our society on so many levels, from poor housing to poor education, to poor jobs to poor nutrition. It needs to be fixed from the ground up, and it is going to take a total re-education, starting with an acknowledgement of the problem, and building from there. It feels like the movement might have the momentum to get us there this time.

If you are interested in learning more, Slow Food USA has put out a great reading list to help educate us white folks, so we can stand in solidarity with our colored brothers and sisters! Please join me in reading, How to Be an Antiracist, by Ibram X. Kendi, or find another book on the list that appeals to you, so we can better understand how we can do our part to create the change we want to see in the world!
