Mexico Judge Rules that GMOs are Imminent Threat – Bans Monsanto’s GMO Corn

It was recently announced that genetically-engineered corn has been bannedin Mexico. According to the group that issued the press release, La Coperacha, a federal judge has ordered Mexico?s SAGARPA (Secretar?a de Agricultura, Ganader?a, Desarrollo Rural, Pesca, y Alimentaci?n), which is Mexico?s Secretary of Agriculture, and SEMARNAT (Secretar?a de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales), which is equivalent of the EPA, to immediately ?suspend all mexican-maize-varietiesactivities involving the planting of gmo corn in the country and end the granting of permission for experimental and pilot commercial plantings?. Judge Jaime Eduardo Verdugo J. wrote the opinion and cited ?the risk of imminent harm to the environment? as the basis for the decision. The judge?s ruling also ruled that multinationals like Monsanto and Pioneer are banned from the release of transgenic maize in the Mexican countryside? as long as collective action lawsuits initiated by citizens, farmers, scientists, and civil society organizations are working their way through the judicial system. This ruling marks a milestone in the long struggle of citizen demands for a GMO-free country

France Upholds Ban on Fracking

France?s highest court on Friday upheld a government ban on hydraulic fracturing. The Constitutional Council ruled against a challenge by American company, Schuepbach Energy, whose exploration permits were revoked after the French Parliament banned the practice. ?Schuepbach Energy had claimed that the law violated its rights, unfairly singled out fracking and was unconstitutional. The court rejected those arguments. In addition to France, Bulgaria has banned fracking. ?On Wednesday, the European Parliament voted to tighten the rules on fracking, giving initial approval to a measure to require in-depth environmental impact studies on all such projects.

What’s In That Chicken Nugget? You Don’t Want To Know

A report published in The American Journal of Medicine, conducted a test to find out just what’s inside chicken nuggets. The sampling found that some commercially available chicken nuggets are actually more like ?fat nuggets.? The chicken nuggets they looked at were only 50 percent meat ? at best. The rest? Fat, blood vessels, nerve, connective tissue and ground bone. To conduct their chicken “autopsy,” the researchers went to two different national fast-food chains and ordered chicken nuggets over the counter. The fast-food chains involved went unnamed ? “we felt that would generate negative publicity off topic,” deShazo told us via email. When put under the microscope, one chicken sample consisted of just 40 percent skeletal muscle ? what we tend to think of as “meat” ? and just 19 percent protein. The other sample was 50 percent meat and only 18 percent protein. The websites of some major fast-food chains calim to serve ?all white meat? nuggets. Burger King its nuggets are made with “premium white meat,” McDonald’s “USDA-inspected white meat,” KFC “premium, 100% breast meat,” and Chick-Fil-A its nuggets are “all breast meat.”
