In the News: The Climate Crisis Puts One Third of Food Production at Risk

According to a recent paper published in the journal, One Earth, a third of the worlds food production will be at risk if our greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise at their current rate. Temperatures will rise, rainfall levels will change, and animals will suffer.

Researchers at Aalto University in Finland have calculated that about 95% of current crop production takes place in areas they define as “safe climatic space”, or conditions where temperature, rainfall and aridity fall within certain bounds. If temperatures were to rise by 3.7C ( approx. 38°F) by the end of the century, that safe area would shrink drastically, affecting south and south-eastern Asia and Africa, nations already struggling with food insecurity.
