Join Your Local Food Policy Council; The Long Island Food Coalition Needs You!! #BreakFreeFromPlastic For Month of July

Are you a local food aficionado or just curious about how policy affects your local food systems? If so, then consider joining me in the Good Food movement by seeking out your local food policy council to understand and engage with the issues of land/agriculture, water supply, and public health! Let’s all come to the table (hopefully with snacks!) as we work together to understand the issues of our local land/agriculture, water supply and the health of the community.

Civil Eats reports how Food Policy Councils play a critical role when shaping the rules/protections and regulations for food producers and consumers. Such was the case when the Durham Farm and Food Network mobilized last year, when our federal government “proposed cutting almost $200 million over a decade from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).”  Suffolk County has a food policy council and you are welcome to attend monthly meetings. Meet with others, and work towards taking back control of our food supply from the industrial food and farming system.

Long Island’s Food Coalition is Looking For Fall Conference Speakers

Do you know someone who is now working to increase access to local, nutritious food in in a Long Island community? Anyone who is passionately working with community outreach efforts or is involved in business, policy, agriculture or food, should be lauded for their contribution to our Good Food movement. You can nominate them to speak at this Fall’s upcoming LI Food Conference presented by the Long Island Food Coalition.

Please email me at Bhavani@iEatGreen.com. I am a Committee member and can bring the suggestion to the organizing group. We will be planning the conference details in the coming months. If you would like to join the organizing committee, we would love to have you!! The next planning meeting is scheduled for July 11th, from 2-4pm at the Planting Fields.

This Month of July You Can #BreakFreeFromPlastic

EcoWatch has reported on the preposterous facts about plastic pollution, along with numerous other environmental and public interest groups. The adverse affects of plastics, which ends up in our oceans, our fish and our drinking water supply systems, needs to be addressed!

In 2011, Plastic Free July, first began in Western Australia. Now, the month-long campaign takes place across the globe, with more than 150 countries participating, today. Take the pledge and encourage those in your circles to do the same!
