If you missed my interview last Thursday with Michel Nischan, please click on the below link to hear it. It was such a breath of fresh air to be speaking with him about the problems of our food system, and to hear his optimistic view of how things are changing for the better! As the Founder of Wholesome Wave, Michel has been instrumental in increasing access to affordable, local produce in underserved communities, while improving the health of individuals and families. He and his team have worked hard to change the policies that make it difficult to create a fair and just food system, and they have implimented new programs, like Double your Bucks at Farmers Markets, and the Fruit and Vegetable Prescription Program, which has helped to reduce the rate of Type II Diabetes in low income communities, and have been able to provide the data that shows that these improved programs are making a difference. But the best part of my interview was Michel’s recognition of how things are changing for the good. He was recently in Washington DC for a healthy school food competition for kids between the ages of 8-11, and was amazed by their sophistication and knowledge of foods and cooking skills, and their interest in eating healthy. He shared some of the stories behind the kids recipes, which were so moving and sweet. Please take a moment to listen to our interview, and check out the Wholesome Wave website and the upcoming new website for Michel at ChefNischan.com.
