Say NO to Factory Farmed Fish; Stop the DAPL; Say YES to Geothermal Tech; Keep GMOs Out of Organic

Say NO to Industrial Fish Farms in the Pacific Ocean!fish-1734910_1280

“When you think of factory farms, you may think of animals crowded into tiny cages, living in filthy conditions. Or endless fields of corn and soy doused with toxic pesticides. But factory farming isn’t just impacting our farmland. It’s impacting our oceans, too. Industrial fish farms are devastating pristine ocean environments around the world. Now, the U.S. government wants to greenlight industrial fish farming in the Pacific Ocean—YIKES. Sign the petition here to urge Michael D. Tosatto of the National Marine Fisheries Service to reassess the entire cost of opening up the Pacific Oceans to such toxic practices.

cnv_1610_goodmandakotaaccess2Tell the Obama Administration to Stop the DAPL

“The multinational corporation Energy Transfer Partners — backed by the biggest banks on Wall St. — is building a dangerous oil pipeline snaking its way across native lands in North Dakota and down through farmlands and across waterways in South Dakota, Iowa and Illinois.”

The Dakota Access Pipeline will carry Bakken crude oil, posing serious risk to drinking water for millions of people and keeping us addicted to dirty fossil fuels.

Water protectors from Standing Rock Sioux and other indigenous communities are bravely and peacefully blocking construction — but the situation is escalating. Militarized police have used violent tactics like pepper spray, rubber bullets and even tasers to break up Native American water protectors and their allies.

Sign the petition here to urge the president to use his authority to revoke the Army Corps of Engineers’ permits and deny the Dakota Access pipeline.

Tell Governor Cuomo to Sign the Geothermal Bill into Law!geothermal-heat-pump

New York is closer than ever in reaching its 50% renewable energy goal by 2030. Tell Governor Cuomo that you support an enforced Clean Energy Standard here!

Fossil fuel combustion and electricity production (via gas/coal fired power plants or nuclear facilities) have obvious negative environmental consequences through greenhouse gas emissions, generation of toxic waste and air pollution, excessive use of water resources and harmful extraction mining. On the other hand, Geothermal heating and cooling is an innovative technology that is very clean and completely renewable.

Sign the petition here to urge Governor Cuomo to sign A.9925 / S.6249, legislation that establishes a much needed tax credit for the purchase and installation of geothermal energy systems.

TAKE ACTION BEFORE NOV. 15: Tell the National Organic Standards Board to keep genetically modified organisms out of certified ‘USDA organic’ food.

jar-576694__180Consumers have always been able to count on the fact that if a product is Certified Organic, it’s GMO-free. That’s because GMOs are not allowed in organic…But now the OTA ( Organic Trade Assoc.) wants to use the loopholes and exemptions written into the DARK Act to force the National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) to allow certain types of genetic engineering, some of which are referred to as GMO 2.0, to be allowed in organic.

Unfortunately, OTA’s membership no longer consists exclusively of organic farmers and producers of organic-only products.  Instead, many of OTA’s leaders also hold leadership positions in Big Food companies. Uh, oh! Though they own and sell popular organic brands, which allows them to sit on the board of OTA, they make most of their profits from selling junk food containing unlabeled GMOs. Sounds like some heavy conflict of interest/cross-contamination, if you ask me!

According to the Organic Consumers Association, that’s why the OTA was in support of the DARK Act, which stopped states from labeling GMOs and instead created a federal GMO “labeling” scheme that does not actually label any GMOs.
