Support Organic Farmers at the “Farm to Family: A Taste of Small Farm America”
On September 26th, there will be a national lobby day and legislative reception in Washington D.C. supporting organic farmers and advocating for change in federal laws.
Organized by the Real Food Consumer Coalition, Organic Consumers Association, Organic and Natural Health Association, and partnering groups, A Taste of Small Farm America is a grassroots advocacy day and legislative reception focused on removing the barriers of access for direct farmer-to-consumer sales.
This event celebrates the abundance of the land and the fruits of our labors. An innovator in the meeting of politics and food, it is a farmers market-style event, including a small-bites reception for our legislators, staffers, and event attendees. This event connects small farmers and consumers with our legislators providing a face and voice to “small farms” and “local foods.”

Stop the Keystone XL Pipeline!
Siding with NRDC, a federal judge just ruled that President Trump’s State Department unlawfully cut corners when approving the cross-border permit for the Keystone XL pipeline.
The State Department attempted to fast-track its environmental review of the pipeline’s new route in Nebraska — but the court stopped this backdoor deal in its tracks, ordering the agency to go back and conduct a more robust assessment before pipeline construction begins.

Sign to Ban Chemical Executive to Take Over at the EPA!
After Scott Pruitt left the EPA, the current administration is looking to appoint chemical executive, Peter Wright, a former lawyer for Dow Chemical and Monsanto employee
In the news this week, we talk about how a court has ordered the EPA to finally ban a herbicide chemical created by Dow Chemical, chlorpyrifos, that has been known to cause brain damage in children, to be banned from all food crops in the U.S. within the next 60 days. The delay of the ban was caused by former EPA Chief, Scott Pruitt.
According to a biography by the American Bar Association, Wright managed “the legal issues and outside counsel with respect to Dow’s largest and most significant environmental matter, the mid-Michigan dioxin matter,” a toxic superfund site that Dow has been litigating for more than 40 years and has yet to clean up. The dioxin contamination, which is highly toxic and linked to a whole host of health problems, including cancer, extends 50 miles down the Tittabawassee and Saginaw Rivers and into the Saginaw Bay, and continuously threatens communities along its banks. Earlier this year, Dow won a major lawsuit that prevented local residents from suing the company for the dioxin contamination.
Wright’s nomination is yet another example of the Trump administration’s cozy relationship with Dow Chemical. Dow Chairman and CEO, Andrew Liveris, headed up Trump’s now-disbanded American Manufacturing Council, and last year, the company donated $1 million to Trump’s inaugural committee. So it wasn’t a surprise that after a brief meeting with Liveris last March, then-EPA Administrator, Scott Pruitt, overturned an Obama-era rule banning chlorpyrifos, the popular brain-harming pesticide manufactured by Dow. If another chemical executive is appointed to the job we may be faced with similar problems which could affect our family and friends health!
