Hi Everyone,
I am writing to you from Washington DC, where signs of Spring are in the air.
The Forsythia are blooming and even the Cherry Blossoms are starting to pop! It reminds me of how much work I have to do when I get back to NY to start prepping my garden for planting. Traditionally, St. Patricks Day is the time to get your sugar snap peas, snow peas, potatoes, arugula and radishes in the ground, and to start some of the long-season crops indoors, like eggplants, peppers, and tomatoes.
If you haven’t ordered your seeds yet, now is the time. There are many wonderful, organic, seed companies to choose from, but its best to choose seeds that come from your region of the country, so you know it is acclimated to your climate. If you’re not growing your own vegetables, the next best thing is to join a Community Supported Agriculture Program. Last week, I mentioned the website,
LocalHarvest.org, where they list all of the CSA’s and Farmers Markets across the country. It’s a great place to start!
While in DC, I had the wonderful experience of visiting Barak and Michelle Obama at the National Portrait Gallery.
They are more amazing in person than in the photo! I also drove by the 7,000 pairs of shoes on the lawn of the Capital, one pair for every child killed since Sandy Hook in 2012.It is past the time to do something about guns in this country. Today at
10am, thousands of students, teachers, and allies across the country plan to participate in a school walkout that will last exactly 17 minutes, one minute for each person killed at Parkland High School. Then on
March 24th, organizers are planning a huge march in
Washington, D.C.,
March For Our Lives, to call for school safety and gun control. Sister marches will take place across the country. I will be marching in NYC. I hope you can join us!
My guest this week on the Progressive Radio Network is Mary Lawrence. Mary is a vegan chef and wellness educator with Well on Wheels, Connecticut’s premier vegan personal chef service. She is a long-time animal activist who connects the principles of nonviolence, compassion, and unity among all beings with her
work and activism. In 2014, she published her first cookbook,
Easy Peasy Vegan Eats. Her new cookbook,
Eat Vegan with Me, combines techniques for engaging in effective conversation with compassionate cuisine to make the transition to a vegan lifestyle delicious and fun. In addition to running her business, she is also an adjunct faculty member teaching English composition at Gateway Community College in New Haven, CT, a Board member of the American Vegan Society, coordinator of the Peas & Love Veganic Community Garden, and co-chair of the Green Party Animal Rights Committee. She holds a certificate in plant-based nutrition from the T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies, a certificate in nutrition and wellness consulting from the American Fitness Professionals Association, an MA in Communication and Cultural Studies, and a BA in English. I hope you can join us
on Thursday.
