Berries Over Bugs! Tell Dannon to Get Insect-Extract Out of Yogurt
Instead of relying entirely on strawberries, raspberries, cherries, or other healthy wholesome fruit, Dannon sometimes uses an extract made from the pulverized, dead bodies of cochineal insects to give its yogurts fruity red colors. Not only is this gross, but deceptive to consumers. For some people, cochineal insects (usually labeled as carmine on food labels) can trigger a dangerous allergic reaction. Dannon needs to skip the insect-extract and switch to adding more fruit for color. Click here to sign the petition.
Tell Google to Stop Funding Powerful Climate Change Deniers
Earlier this month,?Google hosted a $2,500 a person fundraising dinner for one of the world?s most powerful climate change deniers, U.S. Senator Jim Inhofe. Two weeks before that, Google gave $50,000 to the Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI), a right-wing think tank that is also funded by ExxonMobil and Philip Morris (Altria) to put out fake “studies” that are used by policy-makers to deny climate change exists. Google has been a corporate leader in fighting for the environment, so why is it funding the people and institutions that are working to block progress on climate change?? Google needs to know that thousands of its own users want it to cut off all support to climate change deniers who are destroying the planet we all?have to live on. Click here to sign the petition telling Google to cease all funding to climate change deniers.
Want Organic Eggs From Outdoor Hens? Better Act Now!
Allowing hens access to the outdoors makes for more nutritious eggs on farms that are better for the environment. Unfortunately, outdoor production of organic eggs is being threatened by federal regulators. ?The USDA National Organic Program (NOP) is cage-free which means organic hens have significantly better lives than those confined in cages. However, a 2010 investigation by the Cornucopia Institute, “Scrambled Eggs,” revealed that other organic rules, notably the requirement that hens have access to the outdoors, were being violated. It’s easy to see the difference in the welfare of organic chickens that are raised outdoors, as opposed to “cage-free”. This impacts consumers, too, as eggs from organic free-range hens raised outdoors are far more nutritious than eggs from hens kept indoors and raised on exclusively on grain. The standards-setting National Organic Standards Board has sent three formal recommendations to the NOP asking the agency to clarify and enforce requirements for outside access and other living conditions for poultry. But the USDA National Organic Program refuses to act. If you want to ensure that the organic eggs you purchase are from hens raised outdoors, act now! Grow Organics!
Congress will soon vote on a new farm bill which will have a major impact on the food we eat. Currently, your tax dollars go to highly profitable agribusinesses that don’t need the help and to people who don’t live anywhere near a farm. Currently, very little help is provided to the farmers that need it most – small scale organic farmers. We have to change this! Tell Congress that you want your tax dollars to go to programs that help families gain greater access to healthy, affordable food and to farms that are sustainable. Click here to sign the petition.?
