Join the Climate Justice Through Racial Justice March this Sunday!
If you are a New Yorker, then I am hoping you will join me this Sunday at 1pm at Columbus Circle for the Climate Justice Through Racial Justice March and Rally. Never has it been more important to show your support for Climate Justice and Racial Justice, as we approach this historical, upcoming election.
Put Unemployed Oil Field Workers Back to Work, Plugging Up Abandoned Oil Wells!
I’m very sensitive to the fact that the call to abandon fossil fuels will leave many people without jobs, and it is our collective responsibility to see to it that our government helps to train these workers for jobs in alternative energy or other fields that do not add to the climate crisis. In the meantime, we can put them to work plugging up the thousands of abandoned, undocumented orphaned oil and gas wells across the U.S., that continue to release toxins into our air and water.
Demand Congress put people back to work plugging these dangerous wells!
More than 100,000 American oil and gas workers lost their jobs since the pandemic started. Nearly half of those are oil field workers — who have the expertise to plug up these wells.
And we need them. Methane — the main component of natural gas — is a powerful greenhouse gas, over 84-times more potent than carbon dioxide in the first 20 years after it’s released. It’s responsible for a quarter of the warming we’re experiencing today.
Consumer Reports Takes a Look at Pesticides on Fruits and Vegetables!
For years, ever since I learned about all of the chemicals being sprayed on our fruits and vegetables, I have been promoting eating organic. Pesticides are designed to kill living things, and it continues to wreak havoc on our bodies when we eat it, not to mention what it does to the environment. We have been trying to get our government to ban the use of the most harmful pesticides with no success, because they are in bed with the biotech companies, and care more about them, then about us! Check out this article from Consumer Reports!
The Environmental Working Group has been rating produce for years with their Clean 15 list and Dirty Dozen list. They also rate everything from suntan lotion and cosmetics to water, fish, GMO’s, endocrine disruptors, and even cell phones!
The Cornucopia Institute is another organization with some great scorecards on items such as poultry, dairy, eggs, and even toothpaste!
It’s beyond time the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) acts to get these harmful pesticides off our food.
Small and Medium-size farmers, especially those farmers who sell through farmer’s markets, CSA’s, and folks who are Black, Indigenous, and people of color, were left out of the federal aid package that went out through the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program (CFAP). Most of that money went to support the large industrial farmers and did nothing to support our local and regional farmers.
This is a continuation of the unfair distribution of the Trump administration’s multi-billion dollar farm aid package, where the majority of the funds went to big farms and southern states, including Agricultural Secretary Sonny Perdue’s home state of Georgia. Check out this article from the NY Times!
It is essential that Congress passes more aid for families and communities, including helping small and mid-size farms, farmers’ markets, and local food businesses address the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Local and Regional Farmer and Market Support Act (H.R. 8096), introduced by Rep. Alma Adams of North Carolina, will help meet the needs of farmers who have been left out. Please urge your Congressional Representative to co-sponsor this bill.
