President Obama: Fracked Gas and Oil are not the Solution
President Obama recently delivered a major speech on climate change. Although he clearly acknowledged the need combat climate change by reducing greenhouse emissions, at the heart of his plan is increased drilling and fracking for natural gas and oil. This is not an answer to increasingly pressing climate issues! Studies have show that the process of drilling, fracking, processing and transporting natural gas results in a tremendous amount of methane being released into the air. Methane is 70-100 times more potent than CO2 over a 20- year time frame. This summer, the Interior Department’s Bureau of Land Management is accepting comments on a weak set of rules to regulate fracking on federal public lands. We need to tell them to ban fracking on public lands. Fracking and drilling pollute our water, our air, and our communities but it also drives climate change. Tell President Obama that natural gas is not the solution and that we need to invest in real renewable energy solutions now.
Farm Bill Voted Down. A Better Food System Is Possible.
Last week, the U.S. House of Representatives voted down its version of the Farm bill, which is great news since if passed the dangerous King Amendment would have as well. Iowa ag-industry henchman Steve King’s amendment to the Farm Bill would have eliminated the few state laws that ban cruel production practices, including extreme animal confinement in cages and crates, the force-feeding of ducks, horse slaughter, and shark finning.? In a tongue-in-cheek segment on the Colbert Report, comedian Stephen Colbert spotlighted King’s career-spanning crusade against animal welfare and the deplorable conditions imposed on factory-farmed animals. But with the bill headed back to the drawing board, Congress needs to hear from us. It’s time to craft a farm bill that supports sustainable food and farming practices, instead of subsidizing Big Ag’s GMO crops and factory farms. Click here to write to your representative and demand a fair farm bill.

Join 350.org on July 27th for the March for our Grandchildren, where thousands will meet at the White House to peacefully call on President Obama to stay true to his word, and step up to the challenge of climate change. We must demand that greater steps be taken to protect the environment and the future of this planet!
